Universal Sports Bag – PetEgo

April 29th, 2008 by Lindsey Wolko

Universal Sports Bag   This airline approved carrier by PetEgo is one of the most versatile carriers we’ve seen. It converts to connect to a travel kit (luggage for your dog), has an optional bicycle connector and an optional motorcycle connection kit. This product also functions as a containment system in your car. It can also convert to a backpack with the straps included.

Although geared toward little dogs, this product provides big value. Inside, the side vent covers detach to become an interior bed for your companion. The open ends of the Jet Set have removable zippered mesh covers that store inside the bag with snaps. A very roomy carrier for the small dog.

The only thing we’d add would be a little more structure to the design. The sides of this bag are soft and there seems to be little internal support for the sides and top. The bag itself is highly padded but the padding is not enough, in our opinion, to keep this bag from condensing under pressure.

Universal Sports Bag Travel Kit – PetEgo

April 29th, 2008 by Lindsey Wolko

Universal Sport Travel Kit    This airline approved travel kit comes complete with the Universal Sport Bag Carrier (read review), the lower bag, trolley bag and rain cover. The product is modular, snapping together into a neat little luggage set with the attached clips. The grooming bag is the perfect size to carry toys, leash and collar set and sweaters for your little pooch.

The lower bag has an extendable handle and attached casters that make transporting your companion a breeze. We really like the fact that all of these pieces can be used together or separately. PetEgo’s designers have certainly put a lot of thought into functional travel with your pet.

Vehicle Safety Harness – Solvit

April 27th, 2008 by Lindsey Wolko

Solvit Safety Harness   As far as safety harnesses go, this one by Solvit demonstrates good functionality at a reasonable price point. Fleece lined, this safety harness is easy to adjust using the D-Ring tension buckles at each shoulder. The body of this harness doesn’t go too deep on the torso of your dog either – ie: it didn’t dig in under his rib cage when we pulled on it.

We tried the medium size on Spencer, and it was a good fit, and one of the more comfortable for him so far. The elastic tether connects to a D-Ring on the back of the harness and connects around the seat belt by a “Quick Link” – a circular metal attachment with a screw connection. Just make sure that you buckle the car seatbelt when the dog is riding in the car – you need the tension and emergency “stop” mechanism of the seatbelt to be engaged.

Doggy Life Jackets – Paws Aboard

April 27th, 2008 by Lindsey Wolko

Paws Aboard Life Jacket  Oh – how cute! When I first saw these, they reminded me of the kiddie life jackets yet, they are still very functional for your dog. These lifejackets by Paws Aboard are well constructed and provide flotation support to keep your dog in a horizontal position and reduce fatigue when in the water.

Some breeds like Newfoundlands and Retrievers will probably not need these jackets since they were bred for aquatic work, but the little dogs and dogs with low body fat will benefit from their design. Remember, these products should always be used under supervision.

The underside attaches via a wide velcro strip with additional adjustable buckles with mesh fabric. A very secure fit. The front has a narrow velco strip and an additional buckle. We found the front a secure fit, however it tended to be a little bulky. The tradeoffs for safety were worth the bulkiness. Each jacket comes with a d-ring leash attachment point and a handle to help control your companion. (Please note that dogs are much heavier when wet and you may choose to try a product like the Doggy Boat Ladder to help save your back!) Visibility is a very important consideration when selecting a life jacket. Although we liked the lighter, nautical prints for these lifejackets, the yellow should be a definite consideration for safety. You can easily see that color from a great distance.

We recommend that you acclimate your dog to wearing the life jacket before heading out to sea. It is a bit stiff compared to sweaters and coats and needs some getting used to. Additionally, a proper fit is essential. You want to avoid having straps hanging down under the dog – so make sure that you have the jacket sized correctly.

CeCe Kent Luxury Dog Carriers

April 27th, 2008 by Lindsey Wolko

When I saw the CeCe Kent carriers for the first time, I wished I had a little dog that could benefit from such a wonderful, stylish product.

We have four different models here at the office that we feature in our local shows. The Nantucket, the Belair, the Malibu and the Rodeo Drive.

CeCe Kent Nantucket Carrier  The Nantucket is a very conservative, pebble grain leather that looks amazing. (We have the Whiskey color.) The brass lock decorative trim gives the impression that this is a high-end purse – not a dog carrier. Both ends of this carrier have vent holes at the base. The zippered cover has a brass clip on the end so to roll back and connect with the brass loop at the top. Very elegant.

CeCe Kent Belair Dog Carrier  The Belair is a fresh look for the spring/summer months. Available in a Strawberry or Apple print it is sure to stand out in a crowd. With a leather base, handles and strap, this reinforced fabric bag has two panels of mesh on either end for ventilation. One end flap pops down and snaps under the base to provide an open view for your companion. As with all CeCe Kent carriers, there is a safety tether on the inside, as well as a fabric bag to protect your carrier when not in use.

CeCe Kent Malibu Dog Carrier  The Malibu is a very youthful, blingy carrier. With the graffiti print and crystal encrusted buckles this little carrier demands attention. It’s a little smaller than the other carriers, so measure your little companion carefully. The rounded top is completely covered in vent fabric to make sure your friend stays cool and comfortable. When you receive this carrier, you will need to attach the straps. Remember to attach so that the strap goes from buckle to buckle on the same side of the purse. (We attached to the opposite side buckle at first! Oops!)

CeCe Kent Rodeo Drive Carrier  The Rodeo Drive, is my personal favorite. Looking like a very summery light blue purse (also available in rose), this bag doesn’t draw attention to itself. Although rich in appearance, I would have never guessed that this was a dog carrier. With the two outside pockets with the magnetic buckles providing a clever disguise (and some additional storage space for your wallet or cell phone) no one will ever know that you have your companion in tow. This bag also has the mesh fabric for ventilation, however, it matches the cream leather so well it just looks like a texture change.

I was very impressed by CeCe Kent’s attention to detail and the quality of their products. That’s why they were my top pick for fashion carriers. Please note that these carriers are not approved for airline travel. They are a very fashionable way to take your little companion shopping or out for the day.

Bowser Beds

April 27th, 2008 by Lindsey Wolko

Double Donut Bowser Bed Double Donut   I purchased my first set of Bowser beds over three years ago. The dogs love to snuggle in them and they wear like iron. The microvelvet double donut style beds I purchased back then still look brand new. The beds are machine washable too! Just deconstruct them and wash as directed.

Bowser offers several different bed styles for you to choose from, and a wonderful selection of fabrics to help you coordinate with your home. Yes, they are a little more expensive than those beds from the big box retailers, but these beds hold up so much better.

When I brought Madison home, I went to Costco to get two of their Kirkland beds. (Just in case she decided she wanted to tear something up!) These beds have settled so much that they look like a donut…all of the filling has shifted to the outer perimeter and there is no padding left in the middle. I’ve tried to re-fluff them, but the filling is so dense it doesn’t go anywhere. I don’t view these as a good value, since they’ve only lasted 3 months and need replacing.

I look at it this way…it pays to be eco-friendly and help our planet. I want products that wear well – even if they cost a little more. I don’t have to replace the dog beds anymore when I purchase a Bowser product….three years and counting…now that’s a good value. Bowser Donut Bed
